Final Reflection

Specialist Technologies

Loved everything about both classes, not only Dan’s classes were always interesting and for a person like myself I hate talking in front of people but most of the time I felt okay asking questions or answering questions when we had guest speakers. Also in Dan’s class he interacts with students and there was no right or wrong answer so made me feel comfortable answering although I’m still working on it and he was very clear when it came to ICA.

Goals I’d like to set 1. Time management – Coming to class on time. 2. Making time to do extra work. 3. Speak what’s on your mind.

Although I disliked Monday’s I never dreaded coming in on Monday’s because it was obviously SpecTechs classes on that day. It’s a good feeling when you know you want to actually get up and get out of bed because you know you have a good class on today. As for Carsten’s class it was very helpful as I have experienced most of the Adobe software’s before but needed a few help with some tools, Carsten made everything so clear and easy for us to work and get those tricky ICA done!

One problem was not being able to see the big screen as Carsten is teaching but that was it. Sometimes I found myself going on youtube tutorials just to go back and re do whatever I missed out on. Other than that most of our classes with both tutors were good and easy to understand. I wish most of our other classes were the same but then again everyone has their own way of teaching.

Good work Dan and Carsten. Did a great job last semester and now again! Thank you for all you have done for us. Very helpful.

Final Reflection

Creativity and Design Practice

As for this class I enjoyed only a few classes there were times where I felt like they ran out of subjects to give to students so they went with similar ones as last semester and that’s pretty boring. As they say they want to see a lot of concept drawings more than 10 this and that I believe that’s a waste of time, they say they’d love to see concept drawings but most of the time they never want to see those drawings when they see you, they rather see the final work.

Most of the time they’re not clear and this was an issue last semester and still it is continuing and maybe that is the reason why most of my class friends don’t like this class. Not only they’re sick of asking about the brief but they’re sick of hearing an unclear answer.

Never really understood why we had to write reflections when I know none of these lecture’s read any of our reflections.Three main goals I’d like to achieve next semester. 1. Time management 2. Going out of my comfort zone. 3. Never give up on a work you don’t have faith in.

As for feedback was actually helpful from Paul he was very honest and gave his opinion in a good way so that you are able to bring the best out of your own work, most of the time I hated my work but after hearing Paul’s feedback always lifted up my confidence and go beyond what I can actually do. As for Rowena she was never as clear with her feedback, I did not see the point in seeing her as I felt like she only said a few things she didn’t mean just so she had something to say all I can say it was never clear.

This was an issues I wrote last semester and I still see no improvement. During project work I found none of her feedback helpful hence why we never met up with her when she asked too. Other than that this class wasn’t too bad, it has improved since last semester.

Final Reflections

Enterprising Professionals

As for this class was very new to not only to myself but all my class mates. It was honestly my least favourite class, I hated how we had to discuss a lot of things and then share to the class I mean I’m the type of person that hates talking, hates group work and all and then this class just tops all of those topics off which honestly made me dread coming in on Tuesdays. Never really understood why students like us had to even take this class, didn’t really leave the class feeling like I learnt anything. My group was a mess, no one really got along so it was harder for to communicate to what’s going on with this and that everything was all over the place. I couldn’t really ask for help as Cris personally came off intimidating so I was afraid to ask for any help.

I would say the way he teaches is pretty good though, very clear, on to it, knows what he’s talking about and all but for me I just lost so much interest in this class. As a first year student I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, I feel like we’re the guinea pigs in this year and they’re just trying out new classes or new ways where they can be like “oh yeah this wasn’t right last year, we won’t do it to this year’s students” so I felt like everything was just out of place and just everywhere we were the only ones trying to pick up the pieces so we we’re on our own.

I felt like I didn’t really gain any goals from this class other than always be on time and be on top of your group work that’s about it. Next time I would like to set a goal, even 1. If I’m not interested give it a go you may not like it at the start but keep going and you might get somewhere.

  1. Always be on time. (Better late than never)
  2. Make time to sit down and do extra work, even if you don’t need to.

These are the goals I wanted to set earlier and don’t think I accomplished any other these besides being on time.

Perspectives – Week 13

Against dumb photography or photographic form and language..

Guest speaker Allan McDonald joined us today and spoke about different types of photographers and their way of providing a mean through their photograph. This helped me as I’m into photography look at things in a photography I didn’t look or see before, different sorts of lighting, editing (color), meaning and also camera angles and also you change a persons perspective of the photo by changing the cut or photographing one thing in the image it’s actually interesting.

McDonald also showed a few photographers that appropriated a few trademarks from Movies and other photographers which I found out that it’s fine to do so as long you have your own little add to it.

Myself and Harriet gathered two random images and put them side by side and discuss the meaning we came up with here are our two images.

we picked a cardboard box on the street and also a creepy lake.. putting these two images together we saw that this changed a whole feeling – We discussed that this is maybe how a homeless feels when he sleeps alone in a cardboard box. Feeling spooked, scared, alone and also uncomfortable.

Dan pointed out a few good points the same points as our own with these two images we picked and McDonald also pointed things we as students did not notice like the way the cardboard was set out you can instantly think of a homeless person sleeping in there and then the four highlighted all most lighting in the four corners our the creepy lake.

Now after this session I don’t think I will never look at “photography” the same I’ll be looking at the details of the image more of the meaning behind and in the photography.

C&D Practice – week 13

Parody Design

p1050818

I took this picture on my way around K Road while filming. Last week we discussed about “Branding” and “Parody Design” and I really the idea of “Parody Design” and as soon as this sign it had a vintage feel so thought I’d change a few sentences around based on Gentrification here on K Road.

p1050818-copy

As I wasn’t too familiar with photoshop I was still able to remove that sentence and put in mine “We love cutting hair. Also your power bill.” It was difficult gathering the exact same font as the one above so I decided to match it with the colors on the board.

Story Worlds – Week 12

Design & Determinism

“The world is designed” I looked at this as a joke but then discovering a few things on my own when I’m out in public or even at home in my own space I realized the world is designed. When you’re catching the bus obviously you’re not going to wait anywhere on the path – There are bus stops that were design for us to stand and wait so the bus driver knows your wanting to catch the bus or when you’re driving and wanting to park up somewhere there are lines in areas designed for you to park if we didn’t have any of these designs we would be a huge mess.. It’s safe to say “The world is designed

img_0573img_0572

These chairs at the bus stop are designed with black bars in between the seat –  it’s provided so there is amount of room for a good amount of people wanting to sit on the seat without taking up a huge amount of space. I found this a bit funny how they needed to design these seats so people can be nice enough to share the seat I mean it’s basically common sense and unfortunately some people don’t use so they had to go ahead and design it.

C&D Practice – Week 12

During this session with Dan we looked at different types of brands that have a little symbol that represents them or their company in other words “Story telling” I found it interesting as one story or someones progress can lead to their final trademark that represents themselves. We’ve explored

Monographsa detailed written study of a single specialized subject or an aspect of it. Typographythe art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

it wasn’t something new to us students as we’ve discovered these last semester.

Also looking at Design parody was interesting as I’ve notice I’ve come across these a few times and always thought it was funny. I find it – it’s a good way to explore design as you can combine things you like and turn it into something you can have a laugh or maybe some kind of message you’re wanting to convey but not wanting people to get too offend. Reminds me of Culture Jamming something Banksy is good at.

I thought of ways I can create a title of my own for my project it self and I came across a lot of Parody about “Gentrification” which I thought was very clever as some came from one of my favorite tv shows “Full house” and a good Spike Lee film “Do The Right Thing” These have given me a idea on creating my own Parody tittle about Gentrification on K road.

Enterprising Professionals – week 12

As for this class I was assigned to research Shipping/Packing

Packing / Shipping

Company: NZ POST
Oversized items / large, unusual shaped items or heavy Parcels per 25kg within NZ
Business Parcels: same working day delivery
Business Parcels: 1-3 Working day delivery offers a standard business parcel delivery service with the option to track your oversized parcel

SIZE/WEIGHT GUIDE
https://www.nzpost.co.nz/personal/sending-within-nz/parcels/how-our-parcel-sending-range-works

You will be charged the greater of:

  • The actual weight of your parcel (as determined by our scales), rounded up to the nearest 5kg, or
  • The volumetric weight of your parcel, rounded up to the nearest 5kg.

To calculate volumetric weight (kg), measure the parcel’s height (m) x length (m) x thickness (m) and multiply this by 200. e.g. (0.5 x 0.4 x 0.3) x 200 = 12kg.

For example, a 14 kg parcel going within the same island would cost $25.50 using the ParcelPost Tracked service.

The maximum dimensions for larger parcels are:
  • Weight = 25kg
  • Volume = 0.125m3
  • Length = 1.5m

Dimension and weight restrictions include the packaging.

Company: COURIER POST
Maximum length: 1.5 Metres
Maximum Weight: 25kg
Maximum Volume: 0.125m3

Package pricing is generally based on weight. However, if package is light and bulky it may be necessary to base the price on its size. This is called Volumetric pricing.

Enterprising Professionals – week 11

People : Managing , Leading , and Following

Discussed the roles of each team member to how they can follow up and stay on track with their role. This was helpful although I know none of my team members will go along with this – We have a lot on plate and the last thing we want to focus on is something that we know will NOT happen.

screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-10-18-23-am

On the bright side this helped for wanting to start up our own business as I have worked for my parents company that they own and these were a few things I saw that was mentioned in class today, interesting to know that these actually help through out different types of businesses. As I said before it’s hard communicating with people in my group and no one knows what each other wants so everyone s clueless.

Although communicating on basecamp is getting better than before.

C&D Practice – week 11

Collage As Design Analysis..

During this session about Collage made excited because like I said last week I’m more of a hands on person and love to create than just do things digitally (well that’s me) I thought about the good old days in primary where we had to cut out images from magazines we found interesting or something we just liked the look of  and paste on a piece of paper I used that technique but maybe a little more neatly this time.

The 3 collages below I decided that I wanted it simple and plain nothing meaningful just a bunch of pictures all cut and pasted..

img_0215img_0212img_0209

Then the next 3 which are my final ones I wanted to cut up random pictures and turn them into meaningful collages.. These all ended up being last min changes and I was quite happy with the outcome.
